Solon E. Thompson, age 86, passed away at Rosewood Care Center in Galesburg, Ill. on May 17, 2010. He was born on February 9, 1924 in Monmouth, the son of WM Oscar and Elizabeth Barnes Thompson. Solon was reared and educated in Monmouth, and attended Monmouth High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1943-1946, and spent two years in Newfoundland. Solon married Evelyn Beatty on April 24, 1947 in Monmouth, she survives. Solon first worked at Vitality Mills, predecessor to Wells Pet Food in Monmouth, then he worked at Strands Bakery for a time, also he worked at the Maple City Dairy and made ice cream for several years, following that he worked for Vaughns Transfer of Monmouth, and finally he worked 18 years with the "Green Army" at Monmouth College, retiring in 1986. Solon enjoyed spending time with friends and family, baking pies and bread. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Thompson of Monmouth, two daughters; Glenda Whitman of Monmouth, Illinois and Sheila Fryer. There are three grandsons Craig, Tracy, and Paul, one sister Martha Cox of Monmouth, one niece Vicki Hayes (Bob) of Tinley Park, Ill., one nephew Rick Cox of Monmouth, and one great nephew Nicholas Hayes of Crystal Lake, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 half brothers. A graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 21, 2010 at Warren County Memorial Park in Monmouth. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday and Friday and his family plans no hours of visitation. A memorial fund is being established for the Warren County Relay for Life.
