Steven Alfaro, 71, of Galesburg, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Carle Health Methodist Hospital in Peoria.

He was born January 9, 1954 in Galesburg. He married Sharon A. Hornbaker on May 18, 1974 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Galesburg. Steven was the son of Ray and Carmen (Perales) Alfaro. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1972. He later attended Carl Sandburg College where he received his Associate’s of Arts Degree. He was employed as a maintenance coordinator for 32 years at Carl Sandburg College.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 51 years, Sherry Alfaro of Galesburg; son, Antonio B. (Kate) Alfaro of Davenport, Iowa; daughter, Rebecca J. Alfaro of Clinton, Iowa; Daughter-in-law Samanatha (David) Alfaro-Lambert of Galesburg; Along with 14 grandchildren: Allison (Conner), Alexander, Caleb, Mackenzie (Henry), Zander, Bailey, Carter, Sadie, Diego, Alton, Katelynn, Kenley, Kallen, and Kenobi; and two great-great granddaughters, Savannah and Alora. Also surviving are two brothers, Rueben (Marvelle) Alfaro and Ray (Kay) Alfaro; seven sisters: Pauline Brown, Suzie (Doug) Parker, Mary (Greg) Groesch, Frances (Mike) Livingston, Rachael Guzman, Carmen Alfaro, and Vivian Burwell; and one brother-in-law, Bill (Cindy) Hornbaker. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Heath M. Alfaro; brother, Richard Alfaro; and sister, Charlotte Alfaro.

As a devoted member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Steven was deeply embedded in his faith and community. He dedicated over 20 years to serving the church. One of his favorite activities included being a board member for the Mexican Fiesta each year. His thoughtful planning and coordination for this event brought people together in joy and celebration. Steven was not only a man of faith, but also a supportive grandfather who enjoyed celebrating the milestones of his grandchildren. He could often be found cheering at their sporting events and encouraging them with heartfelt enthusiasm. Steven also had a passion for cars. Whether he was working on cars, attending car shows, or collecting toy cars; he was eager to show and teach his skills to those around him.

Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2025 at Watson Thomas Funeral Home and Crematory in Galesburg, with the rosary prayed at 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Galesburg. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Galesburg. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the National Kidney Foundation.
