Thomas E. Camper, Sr.

Thomas Edward Camper, Sr., 93, of East Galesburg, Illinois, died at 6:50 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2026 at home surrounded by his family.

Tom was born December 6, 1932 in Galesburg, Illinois, the son of Willis P. and Irene (Standard) Camper. Following his graduation from high school, Tom enlisted in the US Navy, honorably serving from August 31, 1951. He served about the USS Tingey during the Korean War and was discharged on August 18, 1955. Tom returned to Galesburg and was united in marriage to Betty Jane Whaley on June 1, 1957 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Their 68 year marriage brought much love including their three children, Ginny Clay of Knoxville, Illinois, Bill (Terry) Camper and Thomas Camper, Jr. both of Galesburg. Their legacy also leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Molly, William, Emily, Samuel, Jack, Rodney, Taylor, Lacey, Brad, Seth, and Lexy; along with thirteen great grandchildren. Betty preceded Tom in death on December 17, 2025. Tom is also preceded by his parents; a daughter, Denise Motz; a grandson, T.J. Motz; two brothers, Gene and Donald Camper; and one sister, Connie Hartzell.

Tom began his long railroad career working for C.B.&Q., later Burlington Northern Railroad, and retired from Burlington Northern Sante Fe as a conductor in 1996. In his free time, Tom enjoyed traveling with Betty around the US and trips to Europe. He was a voracious reader and civil war historian. He was a longtime member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Most of all, Tom loved being with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Graveside services with military rites will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2026 at St. Joseph Cemetery, Galesburg. Deacon Michael Crummer will officiate.
