Velma J. Burgus

Velma J. Burgus, age 84, of Monmouth, Illinois; passed away at OSF Holy Family Medical Center in Monmouth, on March 23rd at 6:12 am. "Burgie" was born on December 17, 1924 in Burlington, Iowa and is the daughter of Harry A. and Agnes M. Heffner Burgus. " Burgie " attended schools in Burlington, Iowa and graduated from Burlington, Iowa. She then attended Jr. College for a year and then completed her nurses training at Burlington Protestant Hospital School of Nursing. "Burgie" obtained her licensing as a Registered Nurse in both Iowa and Illinois. "Burgie"was employed for thirty-nine years at both Monmouth Hospital and Community Memorial Hospital in Monmouth. She retired in 1987. She is a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church where she served as Deacon. She was a member of the Illinois Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. She also was a member of Monmouth Women's Club. Surviving her are two nieces, Harriett Burgus Turley of Oregon City, Oregon and Margaret "Peggy" Burgus of Portland, Oregon and her Sister in Law Mary Burgus of Portland, Oregon. Preceding her in death are her Parents, and One Brother Warren. Services:A funeral service for "Burgie" will be at Faith United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth on Monday, March 30, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington, Iowa. Friends may call on Monday at Faith United Presbyterian Church at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. A memorial fund is being established for Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth.
