Vivian Cook McMichael, age 90, of Forest Grove, Oregon, passed away at Wynwood of Forest Grove on August 30, 2013. Vivian was born on September 7, 1922 in Compton, Illinois and is the daughter of Harvey and Bessie VanCampen Cook. She was raised and received her education in the Compton community and graduated from Mendota High School with the class of 1940. Upon graduation she attended Monmouth College for two years. Vivian married Thomas Nash McMichael on July 31, 1943 in College Park, Maryland. She then moved back to Illinois awaiting her husband from his duty in World War II. They moved to South California in 1952 where they resided for thirty-one years until retirement when they moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho for seventeen years before returning to Forest Grove, Oregon to be near her family to date. Her greatest joy in life was to be a homemaker and mother to her four children. She assisted her husband in making their real estate office a success and was his bookkeeper for most of the time. During this time she did receive her real estate license though never made a career of it. Vivian was active in PTA while her children were small, was a member of PEO and an active member of the United Presbyterian Church. Her special interests include reading, gardening, genealogy, traveling, fishing, and her love especially of cats. Surviving her are four children, Thomas Ray McMichael of Orange, California, Daniel Kent McMichael of Forest Grove, Oregon, Mary Ann Whteley of Forest Grove, Oregon, and Terri Jean Mancuso of Sherwood, Oregon. There are four grandchildren David, Jana, Janelle, and Alex; her nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in her death were her parents, husband, Thomas on Dec. 3, 2003, one brother, two sisters, and one grandson, Vincent Whiteley. Jackson McMichael's son, Thomas, served thirty-four years as the college's fourth president, and his son, David, served as the longtime business manager. Services:A memorial service for Thomas and Vivian McMichael is planned at 1:00 pm on June 19, 2014 at the Dahl Auditorium of Monmouth College, built in 1896 under the leadership of president Jackson B. McMichael, great-grandfather of Vivian's late husband. The McMichael family is inextricably linked to the history and success of Monmouth College. A committal service for them will follow at Monmouth Cemetery. Cremation rites have been accorded and no calling hours have been announced by the Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, who has charge of the local arrangements.
