William P. Cook, age 71, formerly of Oquawka and Burlington, Iowa; passed away at 10:40 am on December 24, 2017 at the home of his daughter in North Chesterfield, Virginia. Bill was born on October 10, 1946 in Galesburg, Illinois and is the son of William A. and Edna E. Traxler Cook. He was raised in Oquawka, Illinois where he attended local schools and graduated from Union High School in 1964. Bill entered service following high school and proudly served his Country in the Army and went to Viet Nam as a Specialist 4. He previously was married to Beverly Hultgren. William was employed first by Mc Kesson Chemical Company and after this opened and operated "Sports Discount" in Burlington, Iowa. This business started as a tackle and gun shop which later became a champion bass boat dealership with Mercury and Johnson outboard motors. He also fished professionally on the B.A.S.S. circuit. Having sold his business in 1990 he then moved to Texas in 1991 where he guided fishing on Lake Fork. He owned several business' that started in Texas including a club. He then retired to Emory, Texas doing what he loved, hunting deer and fishing. He is survived by two daughters, Shari (Steven) Meyer of Brenham, Texas and Christina (Shawn) Daughterty of North Chesterfield, Virginia. His son William (Mary) Cook also survives in Spartanburg, South Carolina. There are thirteen grandchildren and one great granddaughter also surviving. Two nieces and three nephews also survive. He is preceded in his death by his parents, two daughters, Jeanette and Lorie, his great grandson Bram and brother Donald. Visitation His family is planning a visitation from 10:00 am to Noon at the funeral home prior to the service. Funeral Service A funeral service for William is planned on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Noon at the Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois. Interment will be in the Oquawka Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established by his family and will go toward Brain Cancer.
