William  L. Mclaughlin Profile Photo

William L. McLaughlin, age 100, of Monmouth and formerly of Kirkwood, Illinois; passed away at 12:40 am on Saturday June 28, 2014 at OSF St.Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born on October 7, 1913 in Bloomington, Illinois and is the son of William L. and Mary Kiley McLaughlin. He was raised and educated in Chilicothe, Illinois where he attended grade school, and graduated from Galesburg High School in 1931. Bill entered the United States Army in 1942 and received the purple heart during World War II serving from 1942 to 1946. He was married to Jeanette Smith in1940 in Burlington, Iowa and she preceded him in death on June 1, 1996. Bill is a member of the Kirkwood United Methodist Church in Kirkwood, and was employed first as an installer and in maintenance at Maple City Furnace Company of Monmouth for fourteen years, and later in maintenance at Monmouth Hospital and Community Memorial Hospital for seventeen years and until his retirement. He is survived by a thirteen nieces and nephews, and one sister, Mary Mattocks in Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers, and one sisters, and his very special friend, Annie Swiler. Services:A funeral service and military honors will be on Saturday July 5th, at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, Illinois and burial will follow in the Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Military rites are to accorded at the cemetery with the interment service. His family plans visitation prior to the service on Saturday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth and will be present to receive friends from 10:00 am to 11:00 am that morning. A memorial fund is being established
